Mr. James Cray

James Cray begins his first season as the Director of ND Prep Basketball and Head Prep Basketball Coach at Notre Dame for the 2026-27 school year.

Cray comes to Notre Dame from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he served as an assistant coach during the 2025-26 season. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Cray served as the program’s recruiting coordinator, managing recruiting visits and prospects while playing a leading role in player development. He also oversaw academic support and accountability for the team’s student-athletes.

Prior to RIT, Cray spent the 2024-25 season as an assistant coach at Vermont Academy, a premier New England prep school with a strong tradition of developing NCAA Division I and professional talent. During his time at Vermont Academy, Cray worked extensively in player development, scouting, and game preparation while helping guide the program through the highly competitive NEPSAC league.

Before joining Vermont Academy, Cray served as the head coach at Rochester Academy during the 2023-24 season. In that role, he focused on building a strong program culture, developing student-athletes on and off the court, and preparing players for the next level.

In addition to his high school and prep coaching experience, Cray serves as the Program Director of Team Northeast, which competes on the Under Armour Association circuit. Through Team Northeast, Cray has emphasized skill development, discipline, exposure, and preparation for athletes pursuing collegiate opportunities.
