Mr. Johnston 64', retired administrator, athletic director and coach is excited to return to Notre Dame High School. Mr. Johnston will serve ND as Interim Assistant to Head of School and Athletic Director.
Mr. Johnston graduated from NDHS in 1964 with his wife Marge Kent Johnston. He holds a Bachelor's Degree from Alfred University in Business and Economics and a Master's Degree in Education and Guidance from Alfred University. Following the completion of his degrees, he served for two years in the Army as a Finance and Accounting Officer spending his second year in Vietnam. In 1971, he was hired by NDHS as a school counselor and head football coach. During his 18 years at ND, he was a school counselor and taught business math. From there he moved into the position of Guidance Director, Athletic Director, Head Football Coach and Head Basketball Coach. In 1988-89 he became Assistant Principal and continued as Head Basketball Coach.
In July 1989, Mr. Johnston transitioned into the public sector as Principal of the Odessa-Montour Jr./Sr. High School until June 1999. Following his time at Odessa-Montour, in July 1999, he became the Athletic Director at Horseheads Central School District and remained in that position until retiring in June 2008. Although retired, Mr. Johnston has continued to share his experience and talent over the years working as interim Secondary Principal for Odessa-Montour in 2015, coaching football and basketball for Corning West/CPPHS in 2008 and from 2010-2015 coached football for Watkins Glen, Ithaca, Elmira and Watkins-Odessa combined football team. Most recently, Mr. Johnston returned to Notre Dame coaching football with his good friend Coach Mike D'Aloisio from 2016-2019.
Mr. Johnston is also the proud father of four children Mike Johnston'86, Lisa Johnston Ermold'87, Betsy Johnston Reidell'89 and Matt Johnston.
Mr. Johnston is looking forward to sharing his knowledge and expertise with Notre Dame as the year begins.
